UK National Chilli Awards 2015 Results

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

ffukLast weekend 19/20 September saw the return of the Fiery Foods UK show in Brighton after a years break and change of ownership, it also saw the return of the National Chilli Awards.

We like to enter competitions, as it is more rewarding than paying for advertising should you gain a place, and fortunately this year we did, well as you can see below.

There were 14 categories, 10 of which we entered, and we placed in 9 of them. 2 further categories, Best grower and Best retailer were voted by all entrants to the competition and the 6 judges.

“A total of 19 producers and over 50 products were entered this year” said Karl Muzio (Fiery Foods UK’s new owner).

The products which won I will update as I find out from the relevant companies.

Product showcase:Incinerator Rapeseed Oil

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

It’s been crazy here at Grim Reaper, so I apologise for the lack of decent blog material. I am trying to get a regular blog together but with making/developing products it’s not always easy to sit and write-the junior reapers also need attention 😉

Ok- thought I’d focus on Incinerator today, seeing as right now the rapeseed oil is being smoked with oak discs in the Bradley smoker.

The rapeseed for our 3 oils is grown/cultivated/ stored/single pressed/filtered/ filtered again and bottled in Wilstone on the Mead farm near Tring in Hertfordshire. The unit is impressive and We have now been working with Simon Mead for over 2 years. The benefits of rapeseed oil are well know with around 6% saturated fat compared to other oils, meaning that along with tasting great, it’s also the best one for you. The rapeseed is cold pressed and only once, the remainder of the seeds once pressed go to the cows so nothing is wasted.

Incinerator is the hottest of the 3 oils we produce, I think the smokiness gives it depth of flavour and embraces the heat.

Unlike other chilli oils, we don’t use smoked chillies to achieve a smokey flavour, but the oil itself is smoked, and for 48 hours. Those with a smoker will know how many discs we burn in that time! We chose oak smoked as it lends itself far better than the other flavours available.

Once smoked, it is then refiltered and extract is added then bottled! Simple as that. The photos are of the old double freezer converted to allow deep trays for the smoking process. If you want a bottle of Incinerator they are £4.95 on our website get yours here

Halloween sauce launch

Sunday, October 27th, 2013

Well, this week is the busiest time of the year from the Reaper…so many souls to burn. And to celebrate our 3rd birthday of Grim Reaper Foods on Thursday, we are doing 3 special things! One, our trick or treat Maverick sauces, available now on the site here . We’re also taking over Mr and Mrs Youngs restaurant for a 9 course chilli feast for 28 pre booked customers AND the launch of our newest, hottest sauce. The restaurant folk will of course try the sauce during the courses of the evening how I intend its use, but I’m sure most of you will find other, far far different uses…

The Evil One, our first sauce, has been the hottest sauce we have done since 2010 when born into this world, where it won the FFUK National Chilli Awards, and I’m please to say it has just won a 2014 Silver Scovie medal, which I will post here once received, so what better way to say thanks to its little brother, to unleash its big brother… Keeping the name a secret for now, it will be on the site from Halloween, I’ve auto set it up, and for Halloween only, 20% off the price for that 24 hours. Just 4 of your English pounds…The link below WILL NOT WORK until Halloween…Three people will get these this week, Hayley, Zach and Paul. 3 years, 3 freebies.

New Sauce

Off to do some burning people….tweet and share all you like please.

3 years on Halloween

Tuesday, October 8th, 2013

So Halloween will bring the third anniversary of the start…Evil One was sold on Hot Headz and Scorchio-Stuart and Karl-thanks! And also the customers who sought the sauce out..

Last year, there was a 12million edition, the extract was given to me by the late great chillipepperpete, so I used it in a ltd edition version of the sauce.

So, this year, there is the restaurant takeover at Gina and Grants restaurant 65 in Hemel. 7 course chilli inspired menu, with guest minions…Burning Desire, Aston Manor Cider, Cola Rebell, Mr Vikkis, The Chillees, Wicks Ice Cream and yours truly…

Is it enough?? Hell no…Halloween is all about trick or treat as far as I am concerned, so for All Hallows’ Eve, I am using my Maverick sauce as a bit of fun. Mavericks do not conform to rules, a bit like myself and those around me. So, for a ltd time, Maverick will be a bit different. On the web, under ltd editions, will be a trick or treat version. Basically, buy Maverick, and you’ll get Maverick-but which one? Or will you order two, and get all three? Or order hoping to get one but get other two? To keep in the spirit of thing, I am not going to allow choice-hence-Trick or Treat! You may pop notes, I may read them…may…

So, there you have it….well, almost. 3 years, 3 things. Another ltd sauce will arrive on the site on Halloween!

Halloween Pop Up-Restaurant 65

Thursday, September 5th, 2013

On our 3rd anniversary, Halloween, we are going to be doing another chilli menu at restaurant 65 in Hemel Hempstead! I know I had said I would like to do one elsewhere, it’s just been so busy through the summer, organising a pop up somewhere unfamiliar has become more difficult than I imagined…

So, 31st October-a Thursday evening, bookings are being taken on 01442 234010 or gina@restaurant65.com

I guess one sitting as before, the menu is still being devised so watch this space!

Chilli Festival Season is upon us..

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

I have been waiting for the chilli fests to really get going, Blackpool earlier this month was a superb weekend in the sun, and the North West had been waiting 3 years for one since the Lake District one sadly stopped…

So, with Eastnor Castle this coming Bank Holiday weekend, Sunday’s weather looks good for Ledbury (where the castle is!), and also, Alcester 18th, Solihull 25th, May is going to be a good month!

One thing, I can’t do anything about as a small business, is card payments. Lots of people ask, but if I can direct them to a cashpoint great, but if not, I lose the sale, and the person then has to buy with the postage fee on top. Well, until PayPal Here is available, I have just listed a ‘pick up from store’ option on my website. So, you can either buy in advance of a festival, to save postage, writing the chilli fest you are collecting at (and which day) or on the day in the comments, or use your smartphone and paypal/debit card on the day and collect! Its the only way at present I’m afraid as card machine rental is a bit out of reach at present!

So there you have it, stuck for cash but wish to buy? In advance or on the day, we’ll find a way…

Finally, the last few Maverick Pre Label will be taken to Eastnor this weekend, so if you can’t go, best get one now 😉

Have fun, signing off…THe Reaper
